Connecticut (CGS §1-200 et seq.): any person may inspect public records; agencies must respond within 4 business days. Exemptions are narrow (§1-210(b)). No response or denial → appeal to the Freedom of Information Commission (free to file).
Federal (5 U.S.C. §552): 20 business days, extendable in unusual circumstances; fee waivers available for news media/public interest. Appeal denials to the agency, then to court. See foia.gov.
Tip: agencies prefer narrow, dated, specific requests — and electronic delivery. Ask for a fee estimate before processing.
